Since the word “selfie” was added to the dictionary in 2013, the selfie craze has only been increasing. According to Google, there were more than 24 billion selfies uploaded to their photo app in 2015. Everyone from celebrities to politicians is obsessed with taking snapshots of themselves every day.

Family dentist Dr. Blagoev decided to use this new cultural phenomenon to help hungry families. If people enjoy taking photos of themselves for fun, they will be even more excited to do it for a charitable cause.

When asked why she decided to donate a meal on behalf of each person who takes a selfie, Dr Blagoev explained, “It is a growing problem. Food demands at the local food pantries have increased and yet food donations have decreased. Hungry families and children need help all year round and we all can help them together.”

She thought of this idea after reading about the rising selfie phenomenon. “I take selfies with my family. I thought why not make this a fun event where we could share our smiles, and at the same time make a family in need smile too?”

Dr. Blagoev is encouraging everyone to participate in the selfie program to help the local community. She called this the “Share a Smile, Make a Smile” program.

Dr Blagoev’s dental office has been providing cosmetic and family dental services to the local residents in Parlin, Sayreville, and Old Bridge Township for over 20 years. With numerous food drives, free dental days, and other social events, Dr. Blagoev has been featured on CBS, FOX, NBC network news.

28 buildings evacuated in NYC steam pipe explosion

Jul 19, 2018

NEW YORK — An aging steam pipe exploded beneath Fifth Avenue in Manhattan early Thursday, hurling chunks of asphalt, sending a geyser of white vapor 10 stories into the air and forcing the evacuation of 28 buildings. Five people, including three civilians, suffered minor injuries from the 6:40 a.m. blast on 21st Street, and officials warned people who may have gotten material on them to bag their clothes and shower immediately as a precaution because of the possibility of cancer-causing asbestos. "The big problem we have to consider is asbestos," said Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito, who warned...

Loon's first commercial internet balloon deal is in Kenya

Jul 19, 2018

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Loon, the internet-delivering-balloon unit of Google-parent Alphabet, is announcing its first commercial deal. The company says it will work with partner Telkom Kenya to deliver 4G/LTE cellular access to Kenya in 2019. The announcement comes just a week after Loon graduated from Alphabet's secretive "moonshot factory" known as X. That means it's considered a full-fledged company beside sister companies including Google and self-driving car developer Waymo. The balloons will be tested in central Kenya, which has been difficult to service due to mountainous or inaccessible terrain. The high-altitude balloons have already been deployed in emergencies in...

Farmers fret and wait as US-China trade war escalates

Jul 19, 2018

MINNEAPOLIS — American farmers have put the brakes on unnecessary spending as the U.S.-China trade war escalates. But they say there isn't much more they can do except hope the two countries work out their differences before the full impact of China's retaliatory tariffs hits American soybean and pork producers. President Donald Trump this month imposed 25 percent tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese products. China responded with similar duties on the same amount of U.S. imports. The administration followed with a second possible round, and Beijing vowed a "firm and forceful" response. Soybean farmer Michael Petefish (PET'-uh-fish) says...

For some, a DNA test produces only uncertainty about health

Jul 19, 2018

NEW YORK — Last year, Katie Burns got a phone call that shows what can happen in medicine when information runs ahead of knowledge. Burns learned that a genetic test of her fetus had turned up an abnormality. It appeared in a gene that, when it fails to work properly, causes heart defects, mental disability and other problems. But nobody knew whether the specific abnormality detected by the test would cause trouble. "I was pretty distraught," says Burns, a photographer in Charlotte, North Carolina. "I had a baby who was kicking. I could feel him moving inside of me. But...

Comcast drops Fox bid, paving way for sale to Disney

Jul 19, 2018

NEW YORK — Comcast is dropping its bid for Fox's entertainment businesses, paving the way for Disney to boost its upcoming streaming service by buying the studios behind "The Simpsons" and X-Men. Comcast can now focus on its pursuit of European pay-TV operator Sky, a deal that would give the Philadelphia-based cable and media company a larger presence outside the U.S. The moves come as the media landscape is shifting dramatically. Cable and telecom companies are buying content makers to compete with popular streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon. AT&T bought Time Warner last month for $81 billion. Comcast...
